Acer rubrum ‘Sun Valley’ is a seedless cross between Autumn Flame and Red Sunset. The characteristics of the cross show most prevalent in the leaf shape that is similar but slightly smaller. Ovate crown, brilliant peach/ orange/ red fall color.
Acer rubrum ‘Summer Red’ stands out in a summer landscape from all other rubrum, the new foliage opens burgundy and fades down the purple stem to a thick leathery dark green leaf unlike any other rubrum. Heavy branching habit and fast growth rate. Not recommended for the upper Midwest.
Acer rubrum ‘October Glory’ has one of the best color displays in the fall landscape with a bright array of orange, peach, and red hues. Oval Rounded form.
Acer rubrum ‘Marmo’ was selected from a grove of seedlings in the 1920’s at the Morton Arboretum. It is fast growing and has a robust structure while maintaining a strong tolerance to both cold and hot environments.
Acer rubrum ‘Brandywine’ was introduced by the U.S. National Arboretum in order to create cultivars that are seedless. With a parentage cross with Autumn Flame and October Glory, Brandywine has exceptional red/crimson purple fall color, crown and growth rate.
In the Willamette Valley, Acer rubrum ‘Autumn Flame’ is always the first tree to color up in the fall and has often dropped leaves before many other cultivars put on their show. Highly bright red and fuchsia fall color.
Acer rubrum is adaptable to a wide range of soils both moist and dry. It’s easily distinguishable in the landscape in the fall with its striking array of brilliance, but holds a wide range of colors when viewed in a mass planting, hence the popularization of selected cultivars.
Acer r. x freemanii ‘Celzam’. Celebration is what you have after a snow and ice storm hits and your ‘Celebration’ maple, is still standing and intact due to its inherently stout branch caliper. Broad shaped leaves with gold, orange and crimson fall color. Height 50’ x 25’.
Acer r. x freemanii ‘Sienna Glen’ has dense branching, able to withstand colder environments than many red maples with vibrant deep burgundy fall color.
Much like Blaze, Acer r. x freemanii ‘Autumn Fantasy’ grows faster than a lot of rubrum cultivars in the upper mid-west but still maintains a striking bright orange-red, fall color with some fluorescent tones. Widely adaptable to hot and cold climates.
